I am a neewbie to tractors but after reading comments and experiences on this forum and others, I bought a used John Deere 1050 (80's) about a year ago which seemed to be in reasonable shape. I used it this year with a used bush hog and realized the 'right lift link' lever that allows leveling rear attachments (right to left) was not working.
The local dealer says a new part is about $350, to fix is about $175. Is it possible to find used parts like this and where? Or, should I just go ahead and get it fixed? I don't really have the time (and maybe not knowledge) to fix it myself.
Along the same lines, what repair manual do folks recommend? I see the I&T Repair Manuals available on-line. Are these good or would it be better to get a John Deere manual?

It sounds like you might have a Top-and-Tilt kit on yours to allow hydraulic tilting of rear implements. If so, that was probably an optional feature and is likely not convered in the tractor manual. Speaking of manuals, I have the JD service manual for my machine and it is excellent. Can't speak about I&T manuals. ....

If it is the top n tilt as Ken mentioned, I would suggest having it repaired. If it is the lift links to the rock shafts aka rock shaft links; try calling around to nearby tractor salvidge yards. ....

If it's a standard mechanical leveler most areas have a general shop that does repair, fabrication and a bit of machining. It might be handy to know of such a place and they also may have lower hourly rates than dealer techs.
Levelers tend to be fairly generic and something might be adapted or a new one fabricated for less than a new part. I wouldn't spend much time looking around if $350 solves the problem and I'm not sure I'd go for repair if parts were bent. Depending on how often it's used you might consider improvements such as TnT or a mechanical crank such as is standard on my Ford.
I&T manuals may be adequate for owners who don't intend to do extensive repairs themselves. They tend to cover several models and may not give complete procedures. They also may not have wiring schematics, which is often the reason why an owner wants a manual in the first place. Factory manuals on the other hand are not instructional and they are written assuming they'll be used by experienced techs.

nancyvanv, Depending on the type of tractors that were popular in your aeria salvage yards can ge a good source for parts. here in the midwest the compact and smaller farm tractors haven't become that popular till just in the last ten years or so, so enough of them haven't gone to salvage yet here to be a real good source. A half day of wandering a salvage yard is like going to the circus for me, somehow the wife doesn't quite see my point of view, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, junk is neat. For the 350.00 I'd probabably opt for new in your case, salvage yard hunting takes time, shipping costs, etc. too. Frank. ....
